Invitation to students of classical archaeology to join the systematic excavation team at Amyklaion for the August 2026

The Amykles Research Project in Sparta invites students of classical archaeology to join the systematic excavation team at the Amyklaion for the August 2026 season. Five students will be selected based on academic qualifications and previous excavation experience. Priority will be given to undergraduate students who wish to continue their studies in classical archaeology at the postgraduate level.

Those selected will be trained and will participate in all aspects of the archaeological research under the supervision of experienced archaeologists and skilled workers. The tasks, which will be assigned on a rotating basis, include: excavation using all tools, stratigraphy research, washing and basic cleaning of finds, keeping a section log, and use of new technologies. The work will take place between July 27 and August 28, 2026, and will be carried out in the field from Monday to Friday, between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., with a 30-minute break. In the afternoon of each working day, from 18:00 to 20:00, the excavation team will gather at the study and log recording area.

Priority is given to students who will stay for the entire period. Free accommodation and meals are provided, but students are responsible for organizing their own travel to and from Sparta. At the end of the period, a certificate of participation/attendance will be issued.
