The Amykles Research Project, innovative technologies in the humanities and international collaborations

Among the proposals approved by the State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the framework of the call for proposals for the "Programme for the promotion of exchanges and scientific cooperation between Greece and Germany, IKYDA 2022", was the joint research project "Archaeological-Geophysical survey of the sanctuary of Apollo Amyklaios in Sparta", submitted by the Ionian University and the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Germany

The object of the project is the investigation, using modern geophysical methods, of selected areas in the archaeological site of the sanctuary of Apollo Amyklaios, near Sparta, to confirm the hypotheses for the existence of unknown archaeological remains resulting from the findings of the excavations carried out there so far in the framework of the Amykles Research Project under the auspices of the Archaeological Society of Athens. Geo-radar measurements will be carried out, as well as high resolution geomagnetic, 2D and 3D geo-electric measurements. The resulting geophysical models are to be spatially linked in a 3D model with the already available excavation information and with additional data, such as those resulting from the LiDAR measurements. This multi-method approach aims to produce a multi-faceted geophysical model of the subsoil in the Amyklaion and provide a basis for archaeological interpretation. The geophysical measurements to investigate the above issues will be carried out by the Institute of Geoinformatics of the University of Münster under the scientific responsibility of Dr. Sophia Nomicos. The measurements with LIDAR and other methods will be carried out by the Laboratory of Archaeometry of the University of Peloponnese in cooperation with the Ionian University and under the scientific responsibility of Prof. Stavros Vlizos, director of the Amykles Research Project.

Members of the research teams of both countries are young researchers, whose interests focus on the application of new technologies in archaeology and the management of archaeological and cultural heritage, the use of geophysical investigation methods for the spatial mapping of archaeological sites and monuments, the use of new technology methods for the mapping and surveying of archaeological areas, documentation, as well as the protection and promotion of archaeological sites.
